The Nakwakto Rapids have been recognized as the fastest tidal surge in the world, and can run up to 17 knots during peak tidal changes.
The surging ocean is forced by the tide through narrow channels and islands. At its narrowest point at the mouth of Seymour Inlet on the remote BC Coast is “Tremble Island” a rock local legend says shakes with the force of the tidal flows. The Nakwakto Rapids are the gateway to hundreds of kilometers of remote and mysterious coastline of the southern portion of British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest.
